Abstract
Object) Our object is to investigate the side effect of carbamazepine in chronic schizophrenics, and to give clinical guideline in using carbamazepine.
Methods) We quantified complete blood cell count and liver function test sequentially(baseline, 1, 2, 4 and 6 week after carbamazepine administration) in 18 chronic schizophrenics. We used analysis of variance(ANOVA, repeated measure) for data analysis.
Results) Repeated measure ANOVAs were perfomed on all hematological and hepatic index-es. Significant main effects were reached with total WBC(F=12.819, p=0.0001), SGOT(F=9.732, p4).0001), SGPT(F=8.123, p-l).0001), bilirubin(F=22.888, p 0.0001), y-GTP (F=28. 948, p=0.0001). There were no cases of major hematological toxicity, such as agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia or toxic hepatitis, in our sample.
Conclusions) Carbamazepine was found to causes statistically significant but clinically insignificant decreases in WBC count and increase r-GTP. However, physicians and patients should be alert to potential sign of that side effect especially serious reaction such as agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia or toxic hepatitis.
